Make sure you don't miss a thing...
Seriously, these resources have life-changing potential. And I'm not just saying that...
I'm Pinterest's biggest fan - but not in the wedding planning, recipe gathering kind of way. In the marketing magic kind of way...
Want to make your Pinterest profile look cohesive and professional? Learn how to keep your boards looking on brand using Pinterest board covers!
This guide will teach you everything you need to know. We’ll cover how to create the perfect Pinterest board covers, as well as how they can help your account. And don’t miss the word of warning – it’s important!
Included in this guide:
A Pinterest board cover is the main image you’ll see displayed for a board on your profile (you can see a few examples below!). It immediately provides the Pinterest user with an idea of what the board is about.
Board covers also tend to use brand colours and fonts. When consistently added to every board, they can make your profile look more professional and put together. There’s a clear sense of branding across all of your boards.
Whether or not you use Pinterest board covers is completely up to you! It’s a preference!
But Pinterest board covers can make your profile look more professional and cohesive. The consistent uses of colours, fonts, and images can make your branding much stronger, which may also make you more memorable.
Covers make you stand out as a business or brand, rather than an individual who just uses Pinterest for personal use!
They’re free to add and don’t take long to set up!
If you are short on time, however, board covers shouldn’t be top of the list when it comes to your Pinterest strategy.
Whilst they’re fun and can create a strong sense of branding, keyword research and board optimisation should always take priority!
If you’re going to use board covers – commit!
Make sure that all of your boards have covers and that they all match. This means keeping on top of adding board covers whenever you create a new board.
Failing to do this can make your Pinterest profile look:
We don’t want that!
So if you do decide to use board covers, be consistent with them!

Currently (in 2022!), the ideal size for a Pinterest board cover is 600 x 600 px.
If you’re familiar with Pinterest, this might seem confusing. The ideal pin size is generally in a 2:3 ratio (i.e. not 600 x 600 px!).
But square images work best for board covers. They don’t require any adjusting and look good on both the desktop and mobile app version of Pinterest.
The easiest way to create Pinterest board covers is using Canva. You can use the free version (although you’ll get access to more stock images and fonts using the paid version!).
Enter your Canva account and select ‘create a design’ in the top right-hand corner.
Then select the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the screen above ‘custom size’.
Enter ‘600’ in the width and height boxes. Then select ‘create new design’.
Next, add a background to your design.
You can either add a block colour or an image.
To add a block colour:
Click the square in the top left corner of the design space and select whatever colour you’d like.
To add an image:
Click ‘elements’ on the side bar, and then ‘photos’. Here you’ll find a plethora of photos you can use in your designs. You can also use the search bar if you’re looking for something specific.
Alternatively, you can upload your own image in the ‘uploads’ section of the side panel.
Once you’ve found an image you like, drag and drop it onto your design and it will fill the background.
Next you can add any design elements.
Go to the ‘elements’ tab on the side bar and you’ll find a section for ‘lines & shapes’. Here you’ll find basic shapes like squares and circles that you can add to your design.
You’ll also find a ‘graphics’ section in the elements tab. You can use the search bar to find graphic illustrations that are relevant to your Pinterest boards.
Now it’s time to add some text.
This should ideally be the same as the name of your board. Users should be able to tell exactly what the board is about just from seeing your board cover.
Make sure to use bold fonts that are easy to read (especially on small mobile screens!).
Avoid script fonts, which can be difficult to read.
To add text, select the ‘text’ tab on the toolbar.
Then click ‘add heading’.
You can change the font and size of the text using the top tool bar.
To download your Pinterest board cover, take the following steps:
Now that you’ve downloaded your Pinterest board covers, it’s time to add them to your Pinterest boards!
Upload your board cover image as a pin to your preferred board.
Go to the board.
Click the ‘+’ button at the bottom centre of the screen.
Then select ‘Pin’.
Upload your board cover image and add in a title and description.
You can also add a destination link. This could be a link to the board you’re adding it to. Or alternatively you could add a link to a relevant page from your website.
Then click ‘publish’.
Go to your board and click the ‘…’ button next to your board title.
Then click ‘edit board’.
Click the image under ‘board cover’.
All of the pins from that board will appear on your screen. Select the board cover image you just uploaded and click ‘done’.
Your board cover will now appear on your profile (as shown in the right image below!).
To add a board cover on the Pinterest app using your phone, do the exact same process.
The only difference is that you’ll find the ‘…’ button at the top right of your board, rather than next to the title!
